Inquiry Guided Learning: Rise Up and Dig Deep!

For almost three years, Lenoir-Rhyne University faculty, staff and students dug deep into research, discussion, and practice to identify an initiative to enhance student learning. Next week, we present “Rise Up! Dig Deep! Nurturing a Culture of Inquiry at Lenoir-Rhyne University” to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) as our plan for improving student learning and enhancing the environment that supports teaching and learning.

This plan is a significant component of the 10-year reaffirmation process with our regional accreditors, but, more importantly, it demonstrates the University’s continued commitment to LRU’s mission as a community of learners and its values – excellence, integrity, care, and curiosity. Local Event to “Celebrate the Doers and Makers” in Catawba Valley Area

A group of local volunteers have banded together to bring a TEDx event to Hickory this spring. The independently organized event, TEDxHickory, is licensed by TED and will be held on Saturday, April 21st, 2012 at the SALT Block Auditorium. At TEDxHickory, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

The theme of TEDxHickory is “Celebrating the Doers and Makers”, where speakers will talk about their experiences creating, making, or starting something here in the Catawba Valley area. The event will be held from 10am to 4pm, with presenters speaking for no more than 18 minutes each. There will be breaks in-between sessions for discussions on the topics presented.

Attendance to the TEDxHickory event is free but limited to a select number of participants. Those interested in attending TEDxHickory are asked to fill out a simple application on the event’s web site, www.TEDxHickory.com. Participants will be chosen to attend based on their desire to use the TEDxHickory event as a stimulus for thoughts and discussion as well as their seriousness about wanting to attend.

Individuals interested in giving a presentation at the TEDxHickory event should fill out an application on the same web site (www.TEDxHickory.com). Presentations will be chosen based on how well they fit the theme of “Celebrating the Doers and Makers” and the variety of the presentations for the day.

“We are looking to have TEDxHickory start an annual tradition of bringing together passionate, forward-thinking individuals to talk about their ideas and experiences” says Dan Goss, event Co-Chairman. “We hope those in attendance will be able to walk away with renewed enthusiasm for what we can all accomplish in our own area and how that work can impact the world at large.”

The TED Conference provides general guidance for the independent TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including the one being held in Hickory, are self-organized. TEDxHickory has been organized by local members of the Media & Tech Guild of Catawba Valley.

Senior Community Health Nursing Students to Conduct Faculty-Staff Health Screening

February is “Heart Healthy” month promoted by the American Heart Association. The senior Community Health Nursing students planned Health Promotion projects on campus this month. On February 1, prior to the faculty assembly one group of students provided “Heart Healthy” refreshments for faculty. These six students have their community health practicum with the Solmaz Institute for the spring semester. They are assisting the Solmaz Institute with clinics, nutritional and health promotion for second graders and high school students, and other community events.

Another group of senior student nurses provided blood pressure screening along with health promotion information. The senior student nurses are also involved in the planning the

Faculty and Staff Health Screening to be held February 20, 21 for a fee of $35.00 (less than most individuals co pay) to have the Executive Blood Panel (screening for cholesterol and triglycerides) and males may also have the Prostate-Specific Antigen Test, which is a screening tool for prostate cancer.

The Screening will be held in the Nursing Lab (213, McCrorie Building) from 6:30 -10:00.The students will provide refreshments for those participating in the screening.

Kontras Quartet Presents Chamber Classics III From Telemann to Television

Friends of the Quartet are pleased to present the Kontras Quartet in their third Chamber Classics concert of the season. Join the quartet on Saturday, February 18 at 7:30 pm in the auditorium of the Arts & Science Center in Hickory. The quartet will perform a number of short musical presentations from familiar composers spanning three hundred years of string quartets.

A pre-concert dinner, catered by Liazzo’s, will be held at 5:30 PM at $35/person at the Arts & Science Center. Reservations for dinner must be made no later than February 16 by calling the WPS office.

Following the concert the audience is cordially invited to the After Concert Reception.

Western Piedmont Symphony is a grant recipient of the North Carolina Arts Council and a funded affiliate of the United Arts Council of Catawba County. Upcoming LRU Steelman Visiting Scientist Lecture

Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Steelman Visiting Scientist Lecture, entitled “Statistical Modeling for Everyone!” is scheduled for 10:00 on Friday, February 17th in the Belk Centrum. The speaker is Martin Jones, professor of mathematics and director of the statistics program at the College of Charleston.

That same day there will also be a lecture intended for students of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, at 2:30 pm in Minges 222. It is titled “The Monday Morning Quarterback: Does box score data hold clues to the results of last Sunday’s football game?”

Professor William Mauney Funeral & Memorial Service

The funeral service for Professor William M. Mauney is today, Tuesday, January 17, 2012, 1:30 p.m., at Beth Eden Lutheran Church, 400 N. Main Avenue, Newton, NC, 28658, officiated by The Rev. Merlin Batt, The Rev. Dr. Bill Mims, Jr., and The Rev. James Foltz Mauney.

The L-R Community is encouraged to join together at a Memorial Service for Professor Mauney tomorrow, Wednesday, January 18, 2012, 10:00 a.m., St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church (beside the University), officiated by The Rev. Dr. Andrew Weisner and The Rev. Dr. Robert Allen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for the following:

In addition to his parents, Professor Mauney was preceded in death by a sister. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Cook Mauney, son, William Marshall Mauney, Jr., and wife Monica (Cooke), daughter Vera Matson and husband, Chris, six grandchildren, two brothers and their families.

Professor Mauney graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne with a BA in Economics and Appalachian State University with an MA in Economics and Business. He also studied at Emory University, Atlanta, GA, University of Florida, Gainesville, and the University of NC, Chapel Hill. Professor Mauney joined the Lenoir-Rhyne faculty in 1967 and received the Hacawa dedication in 1988 and the Raymond M. Bost Distinguished Professor Award in 1989. He was named the Centennial Professor of Economics, was the Founding Director of the Broyhill Institute for Business Leadership, served as Chair of the Faculty Assembly, was Division Chair of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Dean of the College of Professional and Mathematical Studies beginning in 2008. Professor Mauney had also served on the Institutional Budget Committee and had been Director of Lenoir-Rhyne’s Summer Sessions. He was also a very active member of Beth Eden Lutheran Church.

LRU and Community to Celebrate the Life and Works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Lenoir-Rhyne University, in collaboration with other community organizations, will celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with several events in January.

Dr. James Cone will speak at 10:00 am on Martin Luther King Day, January 16^th, in the P.E. Monroe Auditorium on the campus of Lenoir Rhyne University. This event is in conjunction with the L-R Institute for Faith and Learning Series.

Dr. Cone is the Charles A. Briggs Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He attended Shorter College and holds a B.A. degree from Philander Smith College. In 1961, he received a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett Theological Seminary and later earned an M.A. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University.

Dr. Cone has been conferred thirteen honorary degrees, including a Doctor of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in 2000, and the Institut Protestant de Théologie, Paris, France.

He is the author of thirteen books and over 150 articles and has lectured at more than 1,000 universities and community organizations throughout the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. He is best known for his ground-breaking works, Black Theology & Black Power (1969) and A Black Theology of Liberation (1970), God of the Oppressed (1975) and for Martin & Malcolm & America: A Dream or a Nightmare? (1991). His latest work, The Cross and the Lynching Tree, was published in September 2011.

Lenoir-Rhyne to Hold High School Scholars Academy Information Session

Lenoir-Rhyne University will hold an information session at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 19^th, for high school juniors and their parents interested in the university’s High School Scholars Academy. The session will be held in room 213 of the McCrorie Center on the L-R campus.

The High School Scholars Academy, which began in 2007, is designed for high school students who wish to pursue a more advanced academic program for their senior year of high school. Students selected for the program will have the opportunity to enroll in English IV Honors plus three college classes in the fall and AP English (or an approved online class) plus three college classes in the spring.

Applications for the 2012-2013 school year are due February 21, 2012. First preference for admission will be given to students enrolled in the Catawba County, Hickory Public, or Newton-Conover school systems. If space is available, the university will also consider students from private schools, home schools, and other school systems.

Factors considered for admission include high school GPA, courses taken in high school, SAT, ACT, PSAT or PLAN scores, and high school or community involvement.
